Nobody in Cameroon plays basketball! NBA All-Star Joel Embiid got his start in the sport by complete fluke, much to his parents’ disapproval

It used tо be thаt mоst kids in Cаmerооn wаnted tо be Sаmuel Etо’о, but tоdаy there аre аlsо fаns оf Jоel Embiid.

He is currently a dominant player in the NBA after rising from those same streets in West Africa and emerging in 2011.

The good fortune of attending an NBA game in 2009—a matchup between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Orlando Magic—was important in setting the stage for his eventual breakthrough. His mother thought he was in his room studying, but from then on, every time he touched a ball at a local court, he sought to emulate the Lakers icon.

Embiid reflected on his childhood in Cameroon, where he claimed, “Nobody plays basketball,” and he recalled how he picked up the sport solely for fun, not as a means to an end in terms of a professional career. Back then, he had aspirations of becoming a professional volleyball player.

First-trip failure

Uncle Didier Yanga was a pivotal figure in Embiid’s development. To contact Joe Touomou, his childhood friend and the first Cameroonian to play in the NCAA, he snapped a snapshot of Joel playing basketball in front of his house.

“Didier told me that his nephew was getting into basketball and sent me a photo,” Touomou explained to MARCA. “It was 2011. At 16, Joel stood over two meters tall.

Even though his parents didn’t think he’d amount to much in basketball, this prompted Embiid to take his first steps.

Touomou claimed that the opposition did not want the player to on the field. I had to persuade the wife to get me a plane ticket to Yaoundé. I made the trip with a duffel full of gear and the justification that many young people had come to the U.S. for school and basketball.

“His mother wasn’t very open to the idea and I left their house the first time thinking I’d failed.”

Olajuwon: Reflection

Touomou was a persistent overseas scout for the Indiana Pacers.

“I put more emphasis on Cameroonians who had used basketball to get into the US’ most prestigious universities,” stated Touomou. “That ended up convincing his mother to let him come.”

It didn’t take long for Embiid to demonstrate his talent and dedication after that.

“He wasn’t afraid of anything,” Touomou remembers. “He tried things that inexperienced players like him don’t try.”

Anxiety, nevertheless, soon took a grip of him.

Nearly left my job because of bullies.

Embiid moved to the United States when he was 16 years old. He was alone and struggling with the language and culture. He almost gave up since he was the punchline of jokes whenever he dropped passes from his colleagues or blew easy opportunities.

Before saying, “Now you laugh,” coach Kevin Boyle warned the teasing players. “But in five years you’ll be asking him for money because Joel is going to be rich.”

His appearance was always under scrutiny.
